How to Generate Your First Name

A step-by-step guide to getting the best results from your first naming session.

Generating names with Kickass.Name takes about 60 seconds. Getting great names takes about 90 seconds — the extra 30 go into the inputs. Here's how to use each field well.

Step 1: Describe your idea

This is the most important input. Tell us what you're building in plain language. Don't be precious about it.

Good: "A tool that helps freelance designers track client feedback across multiple revision rounds without losing their minds"

Too vague: "A productivity app"

Too corporate: "A SaaS platform enabling collaborative workflow optimization for creative professionals"

The more specific you are, the better the names. You're not pitching to investors here — you're briefing a naming desk. Be honest and direct.

Tips:

  • Include what problem it solves, not just what it does
  • Mention the industry if it's not obvious
  • It's fine to say "it's like X but for Y"
  • Step 2: Describe your user

Who uses this thing? One sentence is enough.

Good: "Early-career lawyers at mid-size firms who hate filling out timesheets"

Good: "Parents of toddlers who want structured outdoor activities but zero prep time"

This shapes the tone of names. A product for venture capitalists should sound different from one for kindergarten teachers, and we use this to calibrate.

    Step 3: Anchor word (optional)

Got a word you love? A concept you want baked in? Drop it here. We'll use it as an anchor — not literally, but as a semantic center of gravity.

Leave it blank if you have no preference. Blank is fine. Forcing an anchor you're not sure about can actually narrow results too aggressively.

Step 4: Pick a domain extension

Choose from .com, .co, .ai, .io, .app, and more. We check availability for whichever you pick.

Honest advice: .com is still the standard. If you're genuinely an AI product, .ai is legitimate. See our [domain extension guide](/help/which-domain-extension-should-i-pick) for the full breakdown.

    Step 5: Choose a vibe

This sets the stylistic direction. Options include:

  • Bold & Punchy — short, aggressive, memorable
  • Playful & Weird — unexpected, fun, slightly unhinged in a good way
  • Clean & Minimal — simple, professional, easy to spell
  • Quiet Luxury — premium, understated, no gimmicks
  • Tech Forward — crisp, modern, signals innovation
  • Warm & Human — approachable, friendly, people-first
  • Note: some vibes (especially Quiet Luxury) apply stricter filters, so you may get fewer results. That's intentional — see [Why Some Vibes Return Fewer Names](/help/why-some-vibes-return-fewer-names).

    Step 6: Hit generate

One treat is deducted when generation begins. You'll get up to 10 names back, each verified available at that moment. Results appear within a few seconds.

If you don't love the results: tweak your description, try a different vibe, or change the domain extension and run again. Each run is a new treat.

    ---

The best names usually come on the second or third run, once you've sharpened your description. Don't be discouraged if the first batch isn't perfect. Even the best naming desks iterate.
